Often, people ask me how trekking in the Everest National Park is different. The first spontaneous answer is 'High mountains and the Sherpa culture'. Other things that make it special could be more intact Tibetan Buddhist practice, availability of deluxe and luxury lodges, the legend of Yeti (abominable snowman), and the trek in the alpine region that escapes walking in the Himalayan foothills.
Experiencing the highlights of Everest National Park does not require a two-week grueling trek. The short Everest cultural trek based on luxury lodges dwells through the Sherpa heartland and gives a deeper insight of their culture with a brilliant view of Mt Everest and other snow peaks of the region.
The legendary Everest region
Everest National Park is gazetted as a UNESCO Heritage site for the unique landscape dominated by the highest mountain on earth, the Mt Everest. The homeland of the legendary mountaineers, the Sherpas, has a special bond with mountains. Mountain gods participate as mask dancers in their festivals and are worshiped to ease the weather-related catastrophe. Yeti, the abominable snowman, still guards the high mountains, and Yaks are tamed as unbeatable means of transportation to date. The legendary land of Yak and Yeti is definitely a must-visit place on earth.
Pristine and adventurous treks in the Everest
Trekking is the best way to sense the culture and landscape closely. But the high mountains make the Everest region a ground for difficult to strenuous treks. The most popular is the trek to Everest base camp, which is 5,380 m. For someone looking for more challenge, there are three passes above 5,000 m traversing the four major valleys in the Everest National Park. More adventurous ones go on organized treks and cross the technical passes of Tashi Lapcha and Ama Lapcha, combined with peak climbing.
Short cultural trek in Everest
However, it is also possible to do a short and easy cultural trek in the Everest National Park. One can just visit the Sherpa village of Khumjung and trek to their most revered monastery at Tengboche within a 5 to 8-day trek from Kathmandu. A short Everest trek could be organized with deluxe and luxury lodges, and pony service is also available to make it easy.
The trek starts with a scenic flight to Lukla at 2,800 m and then heads up to Namche Bazaar at 3,400 m. While the landscape is dominated by snow peaks from the very first day, trekkers get their first view of Mt Everest only on the second day. Once the trekkers are at Namche or above, snow peaks appear looming in 360 degrees. There are several viewpoints to see Mt Everest. Khumjung village at the base of Mt Khumbila is a hidden gem to see the day to day life of the Sherpa. Sir Edmund Hilary built a school here to reward the support of Sherpa in his successful ascend to Mt Everest.
